Through the creative power of poetry the Great Lake Poets Express seeks to raise awareness of the unique world, and the challenges facing it, of Cambodia’s Great Lake — the Tonle Sap. This will be accomplished through the medium of poetry and performance, which will bring to the fore teenagers voices — voices that have traditionally gone unheard in dialogue on the lake’s future.
Highlights
- Participants will be resident teenagers from the floating village of Prek Toal, an isolated community living on the waters of the Tonle Sap. Through poetry and performance, students will have the opportunity to share their hopes and concerns for the Tonle Sap’s future.
- Also participating will be the award winning American poet and author, Carlos Andrés Gómez, the renowned Cambodia poet, Kosal Khiev, and local writer and ‘word’ promoter, Wayne McCallum (aka Dr. HOWL).
- Local-based organisation, Writing Through, will coordinate the poetry workshops, these culminating in an open poetry recital and ‘word jam’ on the waters of Prek Toal village.
- Follow-up performances, featuring images, film, and poets from the Prek Toal workshops and performances, will be held in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.
